Alexander the Great used various methods to establish control throughout his whole empire. When he went to other cities and places to work, he would keep his mother and sister in Macedonia to keep people there loyal to him while he was gone, in the same matter with that, when he conquered places he would respect the lifestyle and culture of the people that live there, for instance when he conquered Egypt he made sacrifices to the Egyptian gods, this is because if he respected them, the respect would be mutual and the citizens wouldn't rebel against him. What he also did was spreading fear, like when Thebes attacked him first when a rumor was spread that Alexander has dead, and when Alexander heard this, he rushed to Thebes with incredible speed and completely destroyed the city, he killed every men and also sold all the woman and children to slavery, by spreading fear, people wouldn't mess with him and this avoided lots of trouble.
